Call and describe it
Describe what you can see or smell, where in the building it is and whether there was a leak, a wet basement or a roof problem before it started.
Colorado Springs Mold Experts connects callers with independent mold remediation providers. Here is how a call works and what typically happens at the property.
Describe what you can see or smell, where in the building it is and whether there was a leak, a wet basement or a roof problem before it started.
An independent provider follows the moisture rather than the stain: below-grade walls, crawl space, under sinks, the attic and anywhere air moves between them.
Ask the provider to show what is affected, what has to come out and what can stay, and to price containment, cleaning, disposal and drying before work starts.
The work area is sealed and filtered, affected material is removed and bagged, surfaces are cleaned and the space is dried and checked before it is opened up.
Leave the area alone. Do not scrub, sand or paint over growth, and do not run a fan pointed at it, because both spread spores into the rest of the building. Closing the door to that room is usually the most useful thing you can do while you wait.
If water is still coming in, stop it if you can do so safely: shut the valve under a dripping fixture, move stored items off a wet floor and note where the water is entering. Do not stand in water near outlets, cords or a running appliance.
Have a rough history ready. When did the smell start, was there a leak or a wet basement last spring, has anyone cleaned it before? Read our mold services, check the areas covered and the common questions, or compare removal and remediation before you approve anything.
